HARBOR ISLAND

TASK FORCE REPORT

Roger Tharp

Owashtanong members Roz Mayberry and Roger Tharp are very actively involved in the Grand Haven City Harbor Island implementation task force (HIITF). Roz is Chairperson of the entire task force. Roger is co-chair of the Restoration Subcommittee. The task force has been charged with implementing the Harbor Island 1993 updated Master Plan. Specifically, the task force is to:

  1. Define wildlife areas;
  2. Plan restoration of those areas;
  3. Determine specific use of the dredge spoils site;
  4. Determine a budget;
  5. Provide options for the tank farm usage.

While the Harbor Island is a former dump and dredge spoils site, it is still considered a significant wildlife and wetland area. Fortunately, the City of Grand Haven has realized the importance of preserving and enhancing this "ecological jewel." Thus, it asked OIAS to be part of the task force. The island is home to a great diversity of bird life. Our local chapter can provide:

bulletImportant survey data.
bulletSuggestions for nesting sites, building and placement of nesting structures.
bulletHelp in planting bird and wildlife-attracting vegetation.
bulletHelp on work details.
bulletProvide financial help.

The task force has been speeding ahead since late July often meeting twice a week. As recommended by the task force, Resources Management Group. Inc. (environmental planners and consultants) of Grand Haven and Capital Consultants (engineers) of Lansing have been hired to draw up a comprehensive design and implementation plan.

This project has offered an excellent opportunity for our ornithological input and involvement. You are cordially invited to attend the meetings and offer suggestions. For meeting dates contact Roz (842-5881) or Roger (842-9399). Watch for future updates in Far Flowing Water about this exciting project.
