OIAS is charged with stewardship of two island sanctuaries owned by Michigan Audubon Society. These two islands represent typical wetland and riparian habitats of the lower Grand River, called Owashtanong (far flowing water) by the early native Indians. 

OIAS sponsored activities within the sanctuaries include:

  • Purple Martin and bat houses erected on the islands

  • Experiments in natural control of Purple Loostrife

  • Cleanup and removal of trash

  • Posting sanctuary boundary signs

The islands can be easily viewed from East End (Eastern) park, shown on the map below.
